The Wonder and Excitement of Chinese Acrobats
Chinese acrobats offer an exciting display of athletic precision and skill through an exquisite program of choreographed moments that dazzle and inspire their audiences with tantalizing feats of gymnastic ability. Through this type of entertainment you may enter a fascinating dream world where fables of ancient history are retold in vivid detail with stunning backgrounds, gorgeous costumes (perhaps some outlandish costumes as well), with human and animal characters leaping and bounding, flipping and tumbling to traditional Chinese folk tunes and other such suitable musical selections.
Well, of course, that's the dream show, isn't it? A stage full of men, women, and children, some waving banners and flags, others come rolling in on giant inflated balancing balls, while a select few of the younger, wispier girls swoop down like birds alighting in a garden looking for seeds, and just as sudden€"they swoop upwards again, to soar to a spectacular height, from which they gracefully dive down again, over the heads of the other performers, over the heads of the watching crowd, only to swoop upwards again. Meanwhile, other performers in the troupe of Chinese acrobats are displaying their skills at somersaults, cartwheels, flips, and kicks, hopefully not overwhelming the audience with so many exciting performers to watch since too much razzle dazzle can make even the most enthusiastic viewer dizzy!
In all this precise dazzling wonderment, you may silently hope for a comical collision€"just once wouldn't it be funny to see two €clowns€ bump into each other from which the hilarity results in a whole platoon of tumblers revealing their presence€"yes, quite the grand thing to see! So the timing has to be absolutely perfect, and in order to do that, the Chinese acrobats rehearse and rehearse and rehearse. In order to maintain the illusion, the execution must be flawless. Since the field of acrobatics is teeming with so many disciplines (e.g., dance, balance, gymnastics, aerobatics, contortion, diving, hooping, juggling, pole climbing, trampoline, trapeze, tightrope walking, and tumbling), there may not be any actual €clowns€ in the acrobat troupe per se.
While the She Huo Cultural troupe did not include Chinese acrobats performing during their appearance in the program of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2009, this certainly would have been an amazing setting€"outside of the Edinburgh Castle gates, twirling down from long tall poles (on portable platforms) holding onto silk ribbons, in a sort of Chinese corde lisse variant of the infamous Indian rope trick, the aerial acrobats spin around and around, then finally descend to join in with the dancing acrobats flailing with swords in each hand, forming a ring surrounding the musicians playing their folk instruments, all enchanting the crowd of onlookers with the mystical melodies of the Far East€"that is until the next act's turn (a traditional bagpipe and drums corps) to enter and march up and down the parade square€¦
So whether you discover that a show of Chinese acrobats is coming to your city soon through a newspaper ad, a TV commercial or radio spot, remember that you are offered an exciting display of athletic precision and skill through an exquisite program of choreographed moments designed to thrill and please all audience members young and old. Welcome them to your city!
