How to Remove & Replace the Alternator in a Saturn
- 1). Open the hood. Remove the connections on the battery using an open-end wrench, starting with the negative terminal, then ending with the positive terminal. Locate the alternator on the side of the engine and unbolt the electrical connections with a wrench.
- 2). Disconnect the throttle body air duct using the flathead screwdriver. Locate the tensioner on the middle of the engine and turn it using the 3/8-inch breaker bar and a socket. Turn the tensioner and remove the belt from the alternator pulley.
- 3). Unbolt the alternator from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift it out of the engine bay and either turn it in for recycling or discard it. Bolt the replacement alternator to the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
- 4). Use the breaker bar to turn the tensioner again and put the belt around the alternator. Reconnect the electrical connections on the alternator with an open-end wrench. Install the throttle body air duct using the flathead screwdriver. Reconnect the positive terminal on the battery and then the negative using an open-end wrench.
