Morning sickness affects more than seventy five percent of women expecting a baby. What exactly is it and what should you expect to happen if morning sickness starts during your pregnancy?

They symptoms of this condition are nausea and vomiting. This usually happens during the first 3 months of the pregnancy. It is known to be worse in the morning upon waking. Some pregnant women may suffer from these symptoms all day.

It usually starts during the first trimester at about 4-6 weeks into the pregnancy and goes away at about 12-14 weeks. In some women it may last a bit longer but for most it is gone by half way into the second trimester.

If a pregnant woman is experiencing very severe symptoms then she may be suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. This condition only affects a very small number of women and the symptoms are persistent nausea, retching and vomiting. The woman is unable to eat so she is unable to supply her baby with nutrients. If she is unable to drink then she can become dehydrated. This condition can last for the full length of the pregnancy. Sometimes if it is very severe then the woman needs to go into hospital.

What causes morning sickness? Although the exact cause of it is unknown, it has been said to be related to the elevated HCG, estrogen and other hormones that are found in a woman's body during pregnancy.

Some reasons why you may be more likely to get it are if you are pregnant with twins, if you where taking the pill and experienced vomiting, if your mother had morning sickness then you may get it too and also if you have a history of migraine headaches then you are more likely to get it as well. There was also a study which showed that women carrying girls had a fifty percent more chance of having morning sickness.

If you are one of the lucky women who doesn't have morning sickness then there is no need to be concern. Not getting any pregnancy nausea does not mean that you need to worry about your baby. Healthy babies are being born to women who did not have this condition all the time. Every woman's body is different.

To get relief from the nausea you can try using sea sickness bands on your wrists. One remedy is to try drinking some ginger tea. It is best to stay away from any food or odors that may bring on the nausea. Other suggestions include eating smaller meals but eat more often so that you don't have an empty stomach.
