Even if you do not have a ready supply of water, landscaping is still possible. Do-it-yourself with ideas that do not require water to survive or look nice. Design a scheme that uses only decorative objects, rather than living things. If plants are your passion, add a few potted "Air Ferns" into the design that do not need water, dirt or even sun because they are actually the sketal remains of a certain sea creature made to look like a plant.

Choose one solid theme for your entire landscaping design, or break up spaces in your yard to be visually different. Garden statues come in the shape of gnomes, fairies, angels and gargoyles just to name a few. Find them at garden centers, home improvements stores and other speciality shops in almost any animal imaginable, real or fantasy inspired. Create fairy lands, whole animal family clans or simply start a collection of ones that you like, whether because of color or shape.

    Dry Water Features

    • Decorate dry water features with other objects of interest.fountain image by cherie from Fotolia.com

Just because you do not have water, does not mean you can't have a few water features. The trick is to decorate them with something besides water. Examples include, buying a decorative bird bath and filling it with colorful rocks or large marbles or using a dry pond to showcase statues of sea creatures like dolphins or mermaids. Paint a blue underwater mural inside dry fountains and add what should be swimming in it like goldfish, turtles or frogs. Finish off these do-it-yourself landscaping ideas by placing a few silk flowers in the mix to add greenery and color.
