What is Interfacing? - Sewing Definition

What is Interfacing? Interfacing is a non-woven fabric that is used to add stability fabric. It is sewn to the back of the fabric to prevent stretching, and can strengthen seams. Interfacing can be bought in prepackaged rolls or by the yard, and is available in varying weights.

Interfacing is usually applied between the lining and outer fabric of a garment, though it is also applied to the back of knits without a lining to stabilize beading or buttons.

What is an Inseam? - Sewing Definition

What is an Inseam? An inseam is the seam that runs up the inside legs of pants, all the way up to the crotch. Yep, I said crotch.

How do I measure an inseam? Start at the ankle where the end of the garment should fall. Measure upward to the apex of the crotch, where each leg piece would join. Add seam allowance of 5/8" and the hem length to this measurement when drafting patterns.

What is an Invisible Hem? - Sewing Definition

What is an invisible hem? An invisible hem is exactly what it sounds like- a hem that has been sewn in a way that hides the hem threads.

How do I make an invisible hem? To create an invisible hem, you just need to catch less of the showing fabric. Fold up your hem and use a long basting stitch to attach the hem to the fabric, using long stitches on the hem, and very short stitches that catch just a few fibers of cloth on the outer fabric.

What is Invisible Thread? - Sewing Definition

What is invisible thread? Usually made of 100% polyester or other synthetic material, this is a clear type of thread that is used to hide stitching. Since it is plastic, invisible thread has a bit of stretch to it, so tight stitch lengths should not be used on sewing machines.

What is iridescence? Iridescence happens when different colors of synthetic thread are used in the warp and weft of the fabric. The effect makes the fabric appear to shine and change color with movement. Organza and chiffon are common types of iridescent fabrics.

Iridescent Fabric Care Instructions: Synthetic fabrics can be washed on warm in the gentle cycle. They can be machine dried on low or hung to dry.

Hand wash iridescent organza and chiffon when possible, as these are usually sheer fabrics that can easily rip.

How to Dye Iridescent Fabric: Since iridescents are most likely a synthetic material, they can not be easily dyed.
