How to Make & Sew Tutus for Babies
- 1). Measure the waist of the baby, and triple that measurement to determine the length of tulle you need. Cut the tulle from the bolt at this length.
- 2). Fold the tulle in half so that the two short ends meet, then sew the short ends together. Fold the tube in half twice by pushing the top layer inside of the tube both times. This should leave you with a tube with eight layers of folded tulle with two closed layers. The closed layers should be on the outside of the tutu.
- 3). Pin together the top layers of the tutu. If you're using ribbon to hold together the top of the tutu, sew two buttonholes about one inch apart and one inch from the top of the front two layers of the tulle. Cut a small slit in the middle of the buttonholes.
- 4). Fold the top one to two inches down from the top of the tutu and sew a casing for the ribbon or elastic, leaving a two-inch opening to insert the ribbon or elastic. If you sewed buttonholes, be sure that they're not sewed closed during this step.
- 5). Fill the two closed layers of tulle with petals through the opening in the casing to add a decorative element to the dress. This step is optional.
- 6). Insert the ribbon or elastic in the casing and feed through the entire waist of the skirt. If you're using ribbon, feed each end through the buttonholes. Try the skirt on the baby and gather the skirt until it's bunched around the waist and then knot the elastic or tie a bow in the ribbon. Sew the casing closed.
