How to Turn Off Alternate Keys in Windows XP

    MapKeyboard

    • 1). Download the free MapKeyboard program from the InchWest website (see Resources).

    • 2). Double-click the "MapKeyboard.exe" file. An onscreen keyboard should appear.

    • 3). Click the "LAlt" button on the onscreen keyboard. You should see "LAlt" appear in the drop-down menu next to "Remap selected key to."

    • 4). Choose "Disabled" from the drop-down menu. The "LAlt" button should now turn green on the keyboard to indicate the settings for the key has changed.

    • 5). Repeat the process for the "RAlt" button.

    • 6). Click the "Save layout" button and restart your computer. When your computer reboots, your alternate keys will be disabled.

    Key Extender

    • 1). Download and install the trial version Key Extender program from the Key Extender website (see Resources). If you want to continue to use this program, you will need to purchase it once the trial has expired.

    • 2). Launch the Key Extender program. You will see a small window where you can make changes to your current keyboard layout.

    • 3). Click the drop-down menu next to "Set" and press the left "Alt" button. You should see "Left Alt" appear in the menu.

    • 4). Choose "DisableKey" from the second drop-down menu.

    • 5). Click the "Change" key to create the keyboard change. You should see the change appear in the window.

    • 6). Repeat the process for the right "Alt" key.

    • 7). Press the "Activate" key to confirm your keyboard remap. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take place.

    Key Tweak

    • 1). Download and install the Key Tweak program from the Tucows website (see Resources).

    • 2). Launch the Key Tweak program. You should see an onscreen keyboard with each key numbered.

    • 3). Click the number "60" key. This is the left "Alt" key on your keyboard. You will see it listed in the "Keyboard Control" section.

    • 4). Click the "Disable Key" button. You should now see "Remap Key #60 to: *Disabled*" in the "Pending Changes" box.

    • 5). Repeat the process with key number "62" to disable the right "Alt" key.

    • 6). Click the "Apply" button to confirm the changes to your keyboard. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take place.
