How to Figure the Square Feet on a Countertop
- 1). Draw a diagram of your kitchen counter area. Often kitchen counters come in one of two configurations -- "L" shapes and "U" shapes. Divide the countertop into sections for measuring and calculating the square footage. For example, section "A" may be between the stove and the refrigerator and section "B" may be from the other side of the stove to a wall. Section "C" may be from the boundary of section B to the sink. Label the sections on your diagram with the letters. Make sure that every portion of the countertop is part of a section without measuring anything more than once.
- 2). Measure the length and width of each countertop section in inches and note the dimensions on your diagram. Measure each section twice to ensure accuracy.
- 3). Multiply the length and width measurements together in each section and divide this number by 144 to find the square feet. Write the square footage in each section of your diagram.
- 4). Add the square footage of each section together to arrive at the total square feet of your countertop.
