Definition:
(noun) A type of large diving sea-duck known for its dense, soft down that provides superior lightweight insulation against the Arctic climate in its habitat. Eider down is commercially prized as well, particularly from female birds. Males have mostly black and white plumage, while females are mottled brown.
All eider species are in the scientific genus Somateria except the Steller’s eider, which belongs to the genus Polysticta.
Somateria eider species include the common, king and spectacled eiders.
