How to Write Turabian

104 10
    • 1). Decide which style of Turabian citation you will use. You will either use a parenthetical citation --- a citation listed within the text itself and separated by parentheses --- or a note at the bottom of each page, called a footnote. Each work cited within the paper, whether parenthetical or footnote, also will be listed in a bibliography in the bibliographic format. Choose either the parenthetical citation or the footnote and use this style throughout the paper.

    • 2). Follow the formats set out by the Turabian manual. The University of Chicago offers a full list of each style of citation. Each citation will vary between a book, a book with multiple authors, an article, a journal or a website. Footnotes always will have a number before the citation entry. Bibliographic entries compiled at the end of the paper will have an indentation on the second line of the entry. Follow every comma, period and space directed by the manual.

    • 3). Format the written paper by Turabian guidelines. Double space all text, leaving a 1-inch margin on all sides. Number all pages, including bibliography pages. Number the first page at the bottom center of the page and each following page at the top right corner. Sequence all footnotes in numerical order, which a word processor should do automatically. The University of Richmond has a useful formatting website for reminders about this style.
