Bissell ProHeat - A Look at Bissell ProHeat Carpet Cleaners

106 276
Bissell® has garnered quite a reputation over the years for affordable home carpet cleaners, since their Bissell Carpet Sweeper days.  They've had years to improve and enhance their carpet cleaners, that's mainly why their line of carpet cleaning products is pretty impressive for a small Michigan company that started in the 1800's.

Bissell makes a good assortment of popular vacuum cleaners for the budget-minded, but it's their line of carpet steam cleaners that's really interesting.  It doesn't hurt that the availability of carpet steam cleaners on the market is rather low, with Hoover© being their biggest competition.  And based on consumer satisfaction, the gap between these two steam cleaner manufacturers just keeps getting narrower. But there are some key differences between Bissell and Hoover steam carpet cleaners, including price.

Bissell's very first carpet steam cleaner rolled off the assembly line in the 1950's and was greeted by a highly appreciative consumer base, eager to have a machine to clean their carpets.  The Bissell steam carpet cleaner line has since grown to a nice collection of affordable steam carpet cleaning machines that range from the upright deep cleaning Bissell ProHeat line, to the more versatile and compact handheld Bissell ProHeat Little Green carpet spot cleaner. But with so many Bissell ProHeat steam cleaners to chose from, it can be difficult to chose the right one.

I've listed some of the newer (at press time) Bissell models - the ProHeat 2X series along with some of the older ProHeat models.  You'll notice that there's a big difference in these two series of steam cleaners where features are concerned and some will affect performance.  But some consumers are happy going with fewer features to save a bundle. Bissell has more carpet cleaners than those featured, as well as handheld carpet spot cleaners that are getting great reviews.  You can see the full line of Bissell products at Bissell.

When it comes to carpet cleaners, consumer reviews tend to be very mixed and that doesn't help when you're trying to decide on a certain model.  There's lots of reasons for these rating differences.  It often depends on what cleaning results you expect to get from steaming carpets. You can't always return a 20-year old rug in a home with four kids and three dogs, to its original pristine condition. And not everybody vacuums first before steam cleaning - a must, nor do they all attack stains as they happen.  If you steam clean a carpet regularly as needed and not delay till stains set in, you'll see improved cleaning results.

1. Bissell ProHeat 2X CleanShot Deep Cleaning System

The Bissell ProHeat 2X CleanShot is the red colored 9500 model of the Bissell ProHeat line of carpet steam cleaners.  It's a full-featured steam cleaner with 12 cleaning rows- DirtLifter® Powerbrushes and a water heater, 2-in-1 water tank and Microban protection. The water heater maximizes cleaning power and that's important because over the cleaning time, the water could cool substantially and that could reduce cleaning performance.

The 9500 ProHeat is priced slightly higher than the ProHeat 2X Select model,  mainly because of the some extra features - CleanShot, which allows you stop and spray solution on spots and the crevice tool is also enhanced. If you're looking for an effective carpet steam cleaner with a powered hand tool for doing upholstery and some spot cleaning, this is the best choice in the Bissell ProHeat line. The CleanShot is also getting better reviews than other Bissell models; another reason to chose this particular steam carpet cleaner. MSRP: $279.00

2. Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Deep Cleaning Carpet Steam Cleaner 9400

The Black Cherry color Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Carpet Cleaner has similar features to the CleanShot model, that include 12 cleaning rows- DirtLifter® Powerbrushes and a water heater, 2-in-1 water tank and Microban protection, but its key feature is Surround Suction® for edge to edge cleaning. It also has all the necessary accessories and powered hand tool for upholstery and stairs. With a MSRP of $249.00, you can save a few bucks with this model if the spot cleaning is not that important to you. Consumer reviews though are quite mixed for this steam cleaner.

3. Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Deep Cleaning Pet Carpet Steam Cleaner

Designed especially for a home with pets, the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Pet Carpet Cleaner has basically the same good features as the Select model, except that the surround suction feature has been replaced with a deep reach pet tool to remove deep down pet stains.  Sounds great for pet owners, however, consumers for the most part, are not impressed with this feature.  I should add here that the longer pet stains are left, the harder they are to remove.  So it's understandable that pet owners may have differenrt experiences when it comes to finding this feature effective. The Bissell ProHeat 2X Select Pet Cleaning System is marketed in series 9400-3, 9400-4, 9400-5, 9400-6. With a MSRP $249.99, it's comparable to the regular Select cleaner.

4. Bissell ProHeat 2X Healthy Home Deep Cleaning System 66Q4

Bissell's ProHeat 2X Healthy Home Steam Cleaner has much the same features as the CleanShot and Select models, including 12 cleaning rows- DirtLifter® Powerbrushes, a water heater and powered hand tool, with the exception of the bare floor cleaning feature.  It is however designed to remove more allergens from the carpet, hence the name Healthy Home, and as such has a special Multi-Allergen Fiber Cleansing Formula. The Healthy Home steamer was also the first 2X generation carpet cleaner to have the Microban protection. You can recognize this model by its Ocean Mist color; it retails for around $279.00.  From checking a few sources, consumers tend to find performance comparable with the CleanShot and Select models.

5. Bissell ProHeat 2X Deep Cleaning Carpet Cleaner Series 9200, 8920

The Bissell ProHeat 2X Deep Cleaning Carpet Cleaner has quite a few differences from the first four models above, which accounts for a lower MSRP of $199.00.  Instead of 12 cleaning rows of DirtLifter Power Brushes, there's 10, but it does have the built-in hot Water heater for MAXIMUM cleaning and Surround Suction® for edge to edge cleaning - two features that are good to have. But no Microban or Multi-Use tools and the cord is slightly shorter. If you want to save a little and don't mind doing without a few features, this Blue Illusion colored Deep Cleaning System can save you money.  It does have mixed reviews though.

    6. Bissell ProHeat Deep Cleaning Carpet Cleaner 25A3

Prices of the Bissell Steam Cleaners drop with the Bissell ProHeat (non 2X) series and there are several differences with this model, but it offers reasonable value for the budget-minder shopper.  Retailing around $149.00, this black carpet steamer falls short slightly in performance compared to the 2X line with mixed consumer reviews.  Though it has a water heater, there's no Microban, spot cleaning feature or powered hand tool and it has a narrower cleaning path than the above models.  But a lower price and basic features may suit some carpet owners.

    7. Bissell AutoCare ProHeat

The Bissell AutoCare ProHeat portable carpet cleaner is getting great reviews. It retails for around $99 and is sold in 1425-4, 1425-6 black models. Spray, suction clean and dry in one step and there's also a stain tool.  With a built-in water heater, the solution stays hot to clean better and there's dual tanks. Consumers are happy with this cleaning tool, find it very effective and a good thing to note, they use it in the home as well as for cleaning the vehicle.

    8. Bissell Little Green ProHeat, Pro Heat Pet

Bissell makes two models of the Little Green ProHeat carpet cleaner, a standard and a Pet model.  Both of these green ProHeat models have a water heater, same good suction features and dual water tanks.  Even the price is comparable.  However, there is an important difference with the Pet model - it comes with an added turbo brush, as well as the stain and crevice tool. The turbo brush is a great accessory and makes the pet model the one to own, because it will give you more power to get stains out, even if you do not have any pets.  The Little Green ProHeat series gets middle of the road ratings from consumers.

Bissel also makes other Little Green Spot Cleaners, but without the ProHeat feature of a built-in water heater.  They also have an extensive line of vacuums and other carpet cleaners.

    10. Why Own a Carpet Steam Cleaner

If you have any carpets in your home, you've probably already realized that renting a steam carpet cleaner is none too pleasant.  It's fine if you have a truck or van to transport it and help to load/unload, but even maneuvering such a bulky and large shampooer around the room, can be very difficult for one person.  Then, there's the rush to get the job done before your rental time is up. And of course, these rental charges add up over time; a few rentals and you could have bought your own carpet cleaner.
