Now That You Have Braces

103 25
Now that you and your orthodontist have picked out the right braces for you, you may be wondering what the next step is.
Once the braces are put on your teeth, you need to be very careful about how you treat them in order for everything to properly adjust and for the braces to do their job.
You need to take extra care of your teeth during this time as well.
One of the first things you must remember to do, is brush your teeth.
At first this will seem difficult while you are still adjusting to the sensations of having the brackets pressing against the inside of your lips.
There is also the pressure of the wires pulling your teeth in a different direction they are used to.
Don't worry, just make sure to brush normally.
At first your teeth may be sore, so when you brush just be a little more gentle until your mouth gets used to the braces.
Another important step to remember is to clean in between your teeth and braces as well.
You must make sure that all of the food and plaque that may build up has been removed.
This will not only benefit your teeth and gums, but it will prevent the braces from becoming damaged too.
Now that you know how to care for your mouth while you have braces there are some other things that you need to know regarding foods and what not to do in order to prevent damaging the braces themselves.
There are certain hard and sticky foods that you should try and avoid while you have your braces.
If you eat these you can break the wires or even lose the brackets.
To avoid damaging your teeth and braces you should not eat the following foods: Skittles, Fruit Roll Ups, Starburst, Jelly Beans, Caramel, Baby Ruth, Snickers, Cracker Jacks, Pizza Crusts, Peanuts, Popcorn, Corn Nuts, Tortilla Chips and Jaw Breakers.
These foods may cause damage to the brackets and wires.
If you stay away from these foods while you have your braces you should have your perfect smile in no time! Another thing to remember is when you get your braces tightened, your mouth is going to be very sore.
You may need to change what you eat for a few days while your teeth adjust to the pressure.
You may have to take some Tylenol to take the edge off after a tightening but that is OK, it just means that the braces are doing their job and the teeth are starting to shift into their proper positions.
Don't worry! It may seem scary, but braces are very helpful to a lot of people.
As long as you take care of yourself while you have them there is nothing to worry about.
Before you know it they will be coming off and you will have a beautiful smile.
