How to Use Redken Shades

104 20
    • 1). Use a deep treatment on hair two days before applying the dye for best results. This will leave the hair in its best condition before applying the hair color. Some dyes, such as Redken Shades, are better for hair health but nearly all cause at least minimal damage to the hair. Deep hair treatments can run from $5 to more than $100 and come in several different forms such as conditioners and oils. They can be found at most beauty supply stores.

    • 2). Keep hair dry for at least 24 hours before applying the hair color. This helps the color bond to the hair, preventing rapid fading. (Demi-permanent hair colors are known to fade relatively quickly, so this is an important step to follow in order to achieve the most vibrant, long-lasting hair color possible.)

    • 3). Cover hands with a pair of gloves, preferably nitrile gloves, to prevent getting dye on hands and fingernails. This is professional-quality, long-lasting hair dye. Whether it gets on the hair or the hands, it's there to stay.

    • 4). Consult the Redken Shade EQ color chart in determining the appropriate shade (or gloss to simply balance current hair color). (See Resources) Also use the chart to choose the appropriate developer. Developers work with the additives in the hair color and significantly reduce damage to the hair.

    • 5). Once both hair color and developer are selected, pour 1 ounce of the hair color and 1 ounce of the developer into the plastic bottle (which usually comes with the dye), cover the bottle tightly and shake until the solution is completely mixed.

    • 6). Apply the solution to the hair immediately after mixing. Part hair into several sections when applying the hair dye to ensure that the color is evenly distributed. Using the tip of the applicator bottle, run the dye from the crown of the head to the base of the neck. Repeat this for each of the sections until roots are evenly coated. Then squirt the dye directly onto hair and rub it through the strands. Make sure hair is completely saturated from the roots to the tips.

    • 7). Allow the color to process by leaving the solution on your hair and at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

    • 8). Rinse hair thoroughly in a sink or bathtub until the water runs clean and free of any color. Shampoo and condition as normal. Refrain from washing or even wetting hair for up to 72 hours after this final wash. When it does come time to wash, avoid using shampoos that contain sulfates because they are harsh on hair and strip hair color.
