    • The red oak tree can reach of height of 80 feet. It can also attain a girth of up to 3 feet.

    Identification

    • The red oak has lobed leaves that contain anywhere from seven to 11 points. The leaves have a dull to yellowish-green appearance, but they turn bright red in the fall. Red oaks are also identified by their bright red under-bark that is clearly visible when the tree is cut or the bark is removed and the underside is examined.

    Growth

    • Red oak trees are fast growers. Under ideal conditions a red oak can grow up to two feet per year. This means that a red oak could grow from seed to 80 feet tall in as little as 40 years.

    Growing Conditions

    • Red oak trees do best in slightly acidic sandy to loamy soil. The trees enjoy full sun and do quite well in city areas due to their high tolerance of air pollution.

    • Red oak trees may live to be over 300 years old.
