Half square-triangle units, are possibly the most commonly used patchwork quilt piece.
The half square triangle is a kind of quilt block.
It kind of looks like a square built from two triangles.
Although, most quilters know it by this funny name, the half-square triangle.
It looks like a square with a single diagonal line.
In theory, this seems like it would be straightforward, but many quilters find it troublesome to perform.
The ticket here is flawlessness in all of the steps while performing this plan.
There are a number of ways to formulate the block.
It is unadvisable to build a half square triangle with two triangle shaped pieces, because then you have to deal with bias edges of the individual triangles.
One way is to make it with two squares.
Step 1 is to cut the two squares from various fabrics.
Step 2- sew two diagonal lines, one half inch apart.
These should be centered from one corner to an opposite corner.
It is most important to sew these 2 lines exactly one quarter of an inch from both sides of the center diagonal line.
Step 3 is to cut between the two rows of stitching and press each seam allowance to either side.
While this all seems well and good, it is tricky to get right.
Human error makes this complex.
Problems like stitching with too big or too modest a seam, or cutting the fabric haphazardly.
Also, fabric can complicate things on its own.
The quilting fabric can wither up if you use too hot of an iron, thereby making a skewed quilt block.
Lots of people contend with this problem by creating their squares larger than called for, then trimming it to the right size later on.
