Worshipping Shiva As Kaal Bhairav
Lord Shiva is one of the more important gods in the Hindu pantheon.
He is supposed to be the creator as well as the destroyer and is worshipped in Hinduism as well as Budhism.
He is the national deity of Nepal.
One of the manifestations of Shiva is Kaal Bhairava.
In fact Kaal Bhairav is supposed to have a further 8 manifestations and appearances.
This manifestation of Shiva is often depicted in manner to frighten people.
He has frowning and angry eyes.
In addition he is depicted with sharp, tiger's teeth and flaming hair.
The God Bhairav is depicted absolutely naked except for wearing a garland of skulls and a coiled snake as a necklace.
The deity is supposed to have four hands and each of his hands carry a noose, trident, drum, and skull.
Generally he is accompanied by a dog which is his vehicle of transportation.
Kala Bhairava Asthma or birth anniversary which occurs in December/January is an important day for worshipping the Lord.
There are many temples dedicated to worship of Kraal Bhairav.
But the one at Ujjain which incidentally is considered one of the most important seats of Hindu pilgrimage is very important.
This temple located about 12 km from the city centre is steeped in antiquity.
The temple has some traces left of lovely paintings that have withstood the ravages of time.
The worship of the eight Bhairavas is a part of Saivite tradition.
This temple is close to the bank of the Shipra River.
One of the methods of prayer of the god is through liquor.
Even now every day devotees offer liquor including wine and whisky to the deity in the temple.
Kala Bhairava was referred to as the Black Bhairava or the Fierce One.
Lord Kala Bhairava is also known as Kshetrapalaka, the guardian of the temple.
In honor of this, keys to the temple are ceremonially submitted to Lord Kaila Bhairava at temple closing time and are received from him at opening time.
Legend has it that Lord Kaila Bhairava is the guardian of people going on long voyages or travelling to distant lands.
Hence before going on a long voyage it is required that a garland of cashew nuts is gifted to Lord Kala Bhairava.
As the vahana (Vehicle) of travel of the lord is the dog, hence feeding and taking care of dogs will please the God.
The sages recommend feeding 11dogs with hallwa and puri (This is a typical Indian dish) every Saturday.
Kala Bhairava refers to time.
Thus as a god he does not accept people who have no value for time and are time wasters.
