How to Paint Furniture for an Aged Look
- 1). Lightly sand the furniture piece and wipe it off with a lint-free cloth. Do not sand off all of the previous paint, because it will provide contrasting color and uneven paint layers that you want.
- 2). Paint the furniture piece completely, going over previous paint to achieve an uneven layered look. Let the furniture piece dry completely.
- 3). Lightly sand the piece again. Stop sanding if the new paint peels off in strips, and wait until it dries thoroughly. Wipe off the excess dried paint with a cloth.
- 4). Rub candle wax on furniture piece areas that you want to retain paint. The candle wax prevents the paint from being sanded off. Do not wax any areas that you want to look worn. Sand the piece again, paying special attention to corners and bevels where paint usually wears away over time.
- 5). Scrub a wire brush across the furniture's surface to create long areas of worn paint. Slide a large chain back and forth to gouge and score areas of the paint. Wipe off the excess dried paint with a cloth.
