Resume Writing: The Simple New Switch Up? (It"s Not What You Think)

103 15
Yes, resumes are picked out of the pile because: The qualifications are right.
The spelling, grammar, format, education level and experience are all there, and in about the right measure.
Out of the "short stack" of resumes which make "the cut", a few will get a phone interview, and fewer still will then be asked in for a face to face - but you can "cut to the chase", and rise to the top like a champion, if you want to.
Crazy as it sounds, most employers really, "Just go on a feeling" when inviting you to interview.
Isn't that nuts? How do they get, "a feeling" from a piece of resume paper, or even a short phone conversation? The vast majority of the input from which we human beings initially judge others is NOT from a person's voice or what they are saying! It's the "Ocean of Motion," isn't it? Any body language expert will tell you, it is a thousand tiny clues from you body - your face, your eyes, and tiny movements of all those - that's where we get our information to "read" another person! When do you normally first communicate your whole being? The company calls - "Mr.
Tough-To-Impress would like to invite you to interview for the position.
"Am I wrong, or are you NOT at your best under the glaring "cross-examination-lighting" in Mr.
Impress's office?Of course you're not! You're darn nervous, and for darn good reasons!Yet, you ONLY have this ONE moment in time to give your first impression to this employer.
It's so easy to blow it! What can you do to: "Change up the game?" Include a URL (website address) with a very short message as part of your traditional resume:"Please view my 90 second video at: Jane Jillarand dot com (Don't write it like I just did (EZA won't let me put a link here) .
This one short sentence, leading Mr.
Tough to your one short (and I mean short) video on your website, can change your life!Do it just like I said - it will build curiousity to see the video.
What could be, "life changing" about a 90 second video of you? You'll get 90 seconds to give "Mr.
Tough" all the high-value input he'll need to know if he wants to invite you in to interview - and you'll be able to put the "you" forward, instead when you're sweating bricks across the desk from Mr.
Tough! You will also have put yourself well above the crowd! What will you say in 90 seconds? Not much, lol!Seriously, practice being relaxed in front of the camera.
Don't "hard script" it - you want to be "natural".
Rough out a script something like: "Hi, I'm Jane Jillard.
I wanted you to get more input about me then you can get from a paper resume.
Write anything (and especially something you are going to say) just like you really talk.
Here's a start:"This video is really short.
I'll just tell you a little bit about my last job...
" Here's the Bonus: If your profession lends itself to photos (if you're an architect or draftsperson for example) you can put some photos on your site just below your video.
This will serve to "enlarge" your resume tremendously! You can also have your resume up on another page which Mr.
Tough can clearly get to later if he should lose the hard copy, or in the event he'd like his boss (Ms.
Impossible) to take a look at your video, your photos, and your resume.
Employers like people who seem consistent and steady.
Doing your simple, fast-and-easy-to-build website with your video, will give any employer an impression of your stability, your tech savvy, and your creativity.
What if you don't feel attractive enough to do a video? The video gives you a chance to be your most attractive, and your most composed.
More than that, it gives the employer the chance to see you as a "whole person", including the "you inside you", without all the extra pressures on you (and the employer) which is always there during a face to face.
Face it, VIDEO isn't going away - get used to it fast! Why? Video is powerful.
My eBook sales tripled when I added a 90 second video at the top of my website because buyers could see and hear me - and that built "like and trust".
This same power will be yours, regardless of your physical looks! You'll get more interviews, and get the job you deserve!Look, I'm in my 50s, bald, a bit over weight, and the "ugly duckling" of my family, and I DO NOT LIKE being on camera! If I can do this, you can too! Now, I know times are really tough.
Regardless of who you are or what you did on your last job, you should consider finding a weekend job which actually works to bring in cash, while you're waiting for your next corporate gig to click.
What should you do next?
