    • 1). Unpack each individual component. In most cases, besides the mattress, you will have metal seat frame, back frame, two leg assemblies and two pivoting brackets. You will also have various Allen-head bolts to secure everything together and the Allen wrench to complete the job. Compare the components with the parts list provided with the futon before you start to put it together. This ensures you have everything you need. If something is missing, contact the manufacturer, get the replacement part and then continue with assembly.

    • 2). Secure the left side pivoting bracket to the inside of the left leg assembly. Usually you will have two to four bolts that secure the two pieces together. Once you install these pieces, duplicate the step with the right side leg assembly and pivoting bracket.

    • 3). Place the right side leg assembly against a wall and place the seat frame on the bottom ledge of the pivoting bracket. Hold the left bracket up and place the other end of the seat frame in the bottom ledge of the left side pivoting bracket.

    • 4). Secure the seat frame to the pivoting bracket ledges on both sides. In most cases, you will have two bolts for each side.

    • 5). Place the back frame against the ledges on the upright position of the pivot brackets and secure both sides with bolts. Again, in most cases, you will need two bolts per side.

    • 6). Place the futon mattress onto the metal framing. In some cases, the mattress has hook-and-loop fastener straps on each end. If so, secure the straps around the metal tubing of the frame. If it does not have such straps, the mattress simply rests in place.
