    Determine the Type of Extension

    • There are many different types of extensions and hair additions. Before starting any treatment to rid the addition of lice, it is important to determine whether the specific piece is made of synthetic fibers or actual human hair. Extensions made with human hair will be fine when undergoing chemical processes to rid the piece of lice. Those made with synthetic fibers, on the other hand, will not fair as well. Luckily, synthetic hair pieces are much cheaper than human hair and can be easily discarded.

    Treatment

    • In human hair extensions, lice can be treated with any of the multiple commercial lice-killing products available. All weaves should be removed before treatment to assure that braided hair can be thoroughly treated. From time to time, certain lice have been known to have resistance to treatments. In the case that a treatment doesn't work, a different brand should get the job done. All lice should be dead within 20 minutes. Lice should appear obviously dead when looking through the hair.

    Removing the Lice

    • Removing any lice and/or nits, lice eggs, from the hair is important. Sometimes a nit can survive chemical treatments, so diligent combing with a fine-toothed comb is required to achieve the best results. Vinegar can be used to make the combing process more of a success. The vinegar loosens the sticky substance that sticks the nits to the hair.
