Late March and Your Plants and Vegetables
We all too often neglect the plants we have in the house, whilst devoting all our energies and attention outside at this time of year.
House plants can be re-started into growth by watering and a little more heat.
Feeding can begin once the plants show new growth, but never feed when the soil is dry or the plant in bad health or resting, and most plants rest in the winter from September to April. Over¬feeding is a temptation, but please note well, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed, or you will be in trouble. Give a little less rather than more, and no double doses. The meanest of men becomes madly generous with the fertilizer tin, and then wonder what has gone wrong wit the plant
By this time of year, the first sowing of vegetables should now be completed, and any seedlings that have been hardened off can be planted out
Gardeners in the north can plant out shallots. Please note that potatoes should only be risked in the warmer gardens unless they can be given protection). Earlies only are worth this risk and trouble, because there is still a strong chance of sharp frosts to ruin things
They can be planted through slits, made a foot apart in strip of black polythene, laid on the ground, which keeps down weeds the soil moist and its temperature higher. The potato plants as they grow push up through them.
Lettuce must be hardened off carefully and all the early sowings will benefit by spending a final few weeks in the cold frame.
At this time chives can be divided and replanted.
If you have peaches and nectarines, then they should be sprayed with lime sulphur or colloidal copper against leaf curl.
Tidy up the strawberries removing all discoloured leaves, and lightly fork in a sprinkling of fertilizer.
