    • 1). Evaluate your canine for symptoms. Dogs that experience this condition may have seizures and poor balance. They may also become less tolerant of physical activity.

    • 2). Take your canine to the vet. Your canine will need a full physical exam to make a diagnosis. Blood tests, x-rays and an ultrasound may be needed. Keep your dog calm during this process by speaking in a soothing voice. Staying relaxed yourself can also help since canines pick up on our emotions.

    • 3). Partner with your dog's doctor to create a treatment plan. Dogs that suffer from this condition become dehydrated easily. Give your dog plenty of fluids and electrolyte therapy if needed. Changes in diet can also be effective in controlling this condition. Discuss your dog's current nutrition plan with your vet and make adjustments as needed.

    • 4). Monitor your dog closely. Canines with diseases of the nervous system are more susceptible to infection than normal dogs. Watch your dog closely for signs of redness and swelling that may indicate an infection.

    • 5). Reduce daily activity. Help your dog avoid stairs by moving his bed to ground level. Keeping him leashed while outdoors can also cut back on extra activity.
