The curbside mailbox announces a home's presence to the passing world, regardless of the state where it resides. Minnesota mailboxes are subject to the same standards and requirements as those in other states. Mailboxes in the city of Lakeville must meet other criteria as well.
Lakeville, Minnesota's mailbox regulations cover the placement, measurements and post installation. According to Lakeville's newsletter, "Messages," roadside mailbox posts must stand at least 12 inches back from the curb. They should extend as far back from the mailbox as possible, to prevent accidental damage. The mailbox must not extend beyond the curb at any time. In the specification drawing for a typical mailbox installation, the illustrated height is 42 inches. In preparation for cold weather, Lakeville's newsletter recommends that owners should mount mailboxes at least 48 inches above the level of the street. They should also regularly inspect for loose attachments, cracking, leaning and damage. Mailbox posts must not extend into the soil more than 2 feet below the level of the curb. When installed over drain tile, posts must have sleeves. The sleeve can be PVC or Sona. A 5-gallon plastic bucket is also acceptable. The "typical mailbox installation" diagram in the Lakeville code provides these facts and other details regarding residential mailbox regulations. According to the City of Lakeville's Mailbox Replacement Policy, the citywill replace a snowplow-damaged mailbox or reimburse the owner up to $50. Lakeville will furnish and install a non-decorative mailbox and treated-wood 4-by-4 post as needed.
The mailbox must sustain damage from the snowplow itself; the policy does not cover damage caused by piling snow and ice. A correctly installed mailbox should easily withstand the pressures of such precipitation, according to the October 2009 issue of the city's newsletter.
