Homemade Worm Composting
- 1). Choose a container to hold your compost and worms. Look for a shallow container, 18-inches deep or less, made of wood, plastic or metal. The container needs to be large enough to easily hold the amount of compostable material your household generates in one week.
- 2). Drill 10 to 20 1/4-inch holes in the bottom of the container to increase air circulation and keep your worms healthy.
- 3). Cover the bottom of the container with a layer of shredded paper. This paper will serve as bedding for your worms.
- 4). Place about two pounds of redworms into the container with the bedding for every pound of compostable waste you produce each day.
- 5). Add leftover food, fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, egg shells and other compostable materials to the container daily to feed the worms.
- 6). Shine a bright light onto the container to harvest your vermicompost after a few months. The worms will retreat from the light by burrowing under the bedding so you can scoop away the nutrient-rich material for use in your garden.
