Termites can cause damage to your home that, if not found, can escalate to structural damage that can cost thousands of dollars to fix. Many insurance companies do not cover termite damage, so it is up to the homeowner to get proper treatment to prevent termites. In some cases, treatment does not stop termites from entering the home. Fortunately, there are ways homeowners can treat termites without enlisting the help of professionals.

    Moisture

    • Termites live and thrive in conditions that are warm, damp and humid. Eliminating the humidity, or moisture, from around your home will eliminate the termites. Moist soil is one common culprit. Plant shrubs and flowers at least 6 inches away from the foundation of your home to draw moisture away from your home. Any leaks around your home should also be fixed so that new moisture is not being added to your soil. This includes moving gutters and downspouts so that they face away from the home's base.

    Chemical Treatments

    • Home improvement stores now offer a variety of home treatments that a homeowner can use for termites. These treatments are chemically based and can be toxic, so use care when applying. It also can go from the soil into water sources of the home, causing a hazard to humans. Follow manufacturer's directions to treat your home with the chemical choices. Boric acid is a chemical used in households and can also be used to treat termites. In powder form, it can be sprinkled on wood or in cracks of the foundation if you suspect termites. It can also be found in liquid form and sprayed on areas that you think termites have invaded.

    Citrus Oil

    • For an alternative home remedy that is nontoxic, citrus oil can be effective. Add an ounce of citrus oil to a gallon of warm water. Use a spray bottle or brush to apply it to wood surfaces that could be attacked by termites. This treatment may have to be repeated several times to kill all existing termites and stop them from multiplying.

    Ants

    • Ants and termites do not mix. Ants are a natural enemy of the termites. If you have a few ant colonies around your home, leave them there so that they can keep the termites at bay.
