Staying Where You Are Is a Bad Career Move

Imagine yourself landing the job you always wanted at the company you always wanted to work for.
You tell yourself that you can stay there for life.
It's all good and well, but if you want to further your career, you will NOT want to stay put.
Staying put can come in many forms.
You stay with your current position simply to avoid the added responsibilities of promotion can deprive you of professional growth.
Sure, you may receive sufficient pay with your current post, but denying yourself an opportunity to grow as the company grows will get you nowhere.
For all you know, your company is in dire need of a manager to keep things afloat.
And by passing up the chance, your company may go under, along with your employment.
Another way you can put it is staying with your job despite the added work and little-to-no raise.
If you feel like you're being taken advantage of because you tend to work after hours and the additional pay you receive is negligible, then you are probably being taken advantage of.
At this point, you have two options.
Renegotiate a raise that makes your extra work worth it, or you can take your skills and talents to a company that's willing to pay for it.
This brings us to another scenario of staying with the company.
Yes, loyalty is something to be appreciated and admired.
However, most companies only value the numbers; both in financials and employee productivity and will lay off a lot of people who are deemed inefficient.
If you feel like things can turn around for the good of the company, you're free to stay.
But it's always best to not sink along with the ship.
Reality is harsh, and you will want to find other opportunities if your current one doesn't seem to have a future.
Finally, staying put in geographical terms is a bad thing.
Sure, you're more comfortable in the town that you grew up in and got used to.
But by getting out of your comfort zone, you get to grow.
And this doesn't mean that you should stay in your country.
If there's nothing for you there, look to other places in the globe.
If you're in the U.
S.
, try Canada, Europe, or even in the other side of the world in Asia or Australia.
If you need to grow professionally, take a look at what you're comfortable with and try to see yourself outside of it.
