Fame: 3 Tips to Survive the Spotlight

103 144
Imagine living your life in the proverbial goldfish bowl where the world sees, analyses, criticizes and pontificates upon your every move.
For many celebrities the experience is the public acknowledgement of accomplishment.
The attention is initially loved and desired.
For other celebrities, they soon can't get away fast enough from their enviable lifestyle.
When privacy and propriety are replaced with intrusion and even oppression, celebrities begin to hate the circumstance within which they find themselves.
Once fame arrives not only is there a lack of personal privacy, mistrust and a growing sense of being cut-off from the fabric of the everyday world sets in.
The Imposter Syndrome can rear its ugly head when human imperfections are seen as fundamental flaws undeserving of the success and accolades bestowed.
Some find a way to adapt, others crash and burn.
Living in luxury, many of the famous feel like their personal and family space is violated day after day.
Membership in fame's exclusive club can become the latchkey that locks one in within oneself or the addictive magic pill to remain publicly significant.
I'm often asked, "How does a celebrity stay sane in a seemingly insane world?" My answer is this: Stay grounded and real in the relationship you have with yourself, the relationship you have with how you define success and wealth and in your relationship with your place in the world.
Here are three tips to do just that: 1.
Keep it Real With celebrity comes unrealistic idolization and expectation.
Stay grounded in your humanity.
To try to maintain an image of perfection is nuts and will make you nuts.
As humans we are all here to learn and grow - and that requires quite a bit of trial and error.
Keep it real by being humble.
Be willing to let the world see you as a human being instead of a God-like star.
Mindfully include people from all walks of life in your daily conversations and personal relationships.
Be curious about how the "regular" people you meet live, their struggles as well as triumphs.
2.
Manage Stress In a career with endless demands, great risk and profound pressure to stay on top stress is a constant companion.
Invest your time, energy and financial resources in what feeds your soul rather than just what feeds the media and career machine.
Value and maintain a healthy emotional intelligence over unhealthy egoist demands of yourself and others.
Surround yourself with a positive support system that values your best interests rather than their own personal agendas.
3.
Make a Meaningful Difference Leverage your fame and fortune to serve the greater good of all - including yourself and those you love.
Fame is fleeting.
Some say it never lasts.
For a lifelong feeling of significance, find a cause or a project and take a stand.
With appreciation for all that you have and all that you have become, get involved in humanitarian efforts.
Your life will become bigger than your latest photo shoot.
The difference you make will have a positive impact for generations long after you're gone.
While the media likes to "dumpster-dive" with the attention they give to the dark side of fame, many in the spotlight use it to light up the world.
They deal with fame well.
They like fame and fame adores them.
Fame is just another asset to leverage rather than a defining mask of importance.
I look forward to the day when the cult of celebrity is celebrated for those who positively leverage fame and fortune rather than destroyed by the merciless monster that eats its own head.
