How to Cut Thick Steel With a Cutting Torch
- 1). Prepare the torch by consulting the manufacturer's instructions. Use the correct tip and be sure the openings are clean or the cuts will not be precise (the flame spire is smooth and not ragged in a clean tip). Clamp or place in a vise the thick steel to be cut if it is not in place or otherwise secure.
- 2). Open the acetylene valve on the torch and light it (flame is orange) with a striker. Open the oxygen slowly, and the flame will turn blue with satellite blue-tinged white flames. Control the oxygen valve until the cutting tip is formed.
- 3). Warm the area of the thick steel to be cut by sweeping the torch over the section. Heat the entrance to the cut until it glows reddish. Immediately begin cutting to avoid damaging the metal or causing personal injury. Slant the tip of the flame away from you for a neater cut.
