When TV shows die they don't fade away, instead they go into syndication. And that is why there are four TV spin offs, one cartoon, countless video and board games, a near infinite number of novels and eleven movies in the Star Trek franchise to date. You can read more on the movies with Cracked writer Peter Lynn's Best and Worse Star Trek Movies of all time. Or check out Chris Bucholz's article on the new movie Star Trek Prequel Spoilers.
To get a sense of how much actual science has made its way into the science fiction universe of Star Trek, ScientificAmerican.com spoke to Lawrence Krauss, author of The Physics of Star Trek, the first edition of which appeared on bookshelves in 1995.
Balkanize Me: It finally happens to the crumbling Romulan Star Empire. Specifically, Commander Donatra declares herself empress of a new interstellar nation, the Imperial Romulan State, with the result that Romulan space is effectively split in two. When I first wrote the book, we thought most stars could have planets, but we had no idea of the frequency or of the diversity of ways that exoplanets could form. There's water on Mars, and it was probably once warm; Jupiter's moon Europa likely has a liquid ocean. For exoplanets not in the Earth-like Goldilocks zone around their stars, maybe they have an environment sustainable for non€"Earth-like life. Perhaps there is life out there that is silicon-based rather than carbon-based like our own.
