Channels, Genres and New Offerings
Look at what choices can actually do to a person! Earlier, a family of not more than 6 people had clearly just two set of viewers. The first being the Hindi TV drama loving audiences and the second being the sports and news fanatics. Also, to cater to each group, there were not more than 2-3 channels and 3-4 programs. Lesser choices, lesser confusion; easier life!
But technology has its own ways. With government policies coming in action, together they stitched a larger web. The new Indian television is full of choices, niches and exploring channels, genres and their programs. Indian entertainment is now further divided into drama, comedy, reality, crime and adventure. So is the case with news and sports, as the numbers of shows and channels have drastically gone up. While almost each sport has channels dedicated to it, especially cricket and football; the tournaments and their commercialization has also seen a huge growth.
At the same time Hindi TV drama has further catered to different audiences, for example, Star Plus mainly caters to sections of cities and small towns, while Zee TV concentrates on catering to the middle class audience. Comedy too, has seen a drastic change with channels like SAB TV dedicating them to the genre of comedy. This also ensures exploring and experimenting within the genre of comedy.
Light hearted comedy, comedy Hindi drama, superheroes, etc. are genres being explored through various shows on the channel. This could also be one of the reasons for more viewers shifting to comedy channels.
Simultaneously, channels like Comedy Central, Star World, and Zee Caf© are also making a mark with the Indian urban audience as more and more Indian viewers are accepting American shows. Be it with popular shows like Sex and the City, Gossip girl, Two and a Half Men, The Simpsons, Friends and The Big bang Theory; their acceptance with the Indian viewers is witnessing a rapid growth.
And then there are basketful of movie channels that add to all that confusion, with a new channel coming up every two months in Hindi and more channels coming up for English films too. While the viewers are getting further divided into niches there is also a better acceptance of newer offerings.

Some channels are local, while there are more channels coming up on a national level. However, the viewers are not complaining as far as they are getting their voltage of drama and entertainment on frequent basis.
