104 7
    • 1). Gain playing experience on any level (high school, college or professional) so you can have some insight into the game. Coaching theory, and learning X's and O's on paper is one thing, but to really have a fundamental understanding of the game flows you should have playing experience. As a player, begin observing your coaches and picking up on effective coaching techniques and drills. Study how they interact with players and what kind of rules they implement. Develop great communication skills.

    • 2). Earn a college degree in physical education, physiology or sports management, although there is no recommended major for would-be coaches. Take any coaching classes offered at your school. Volunteer wherever you can to gain experience. Seek out a mentor who will teach you the ins and outs of coaching, as well as the business. Perhaps you will be fortunate enough to land a graduate assistant or high school coaching job out of college. Other ways to gain coaching experience is by working at basketball camps.

    • 3). Attend coaching clinics and conferences where you will rub shoulders and network with some of the best coaching minds in the countryk. Ask questions and try to pick apart their coaching strategies and philosophy. Internalize concepts such as player substitutions, timeouts strategy and zone defense. Also learn to break down film and scout an opposing team.

    • 4). Browse online job listings for any vacancies at a high school or college. If you begin your career on the high school level, as many coaches do, you will have to be certified by the state. Lean on your growing network for any job leads. Most pro coaches have significant experience on the collegiate level, generally at a major program. Be patient after taking your first major college coaching job, as only after compiling a proven track record of winning will you receive serious consideration on the pro level. Even after you reach the professional level, you may have to serve as an assistant coach for years before a head coaching position opens up.
