Daylily Planting Instructions
- 1). Select a daylily planting area that receives full sunlight, preferably from a south-facing direction, and has a well-draining loam soil.
- 2). Prepare the planting area by working 2 to 3 inches of organic compost into the soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches. Test the soil pH to verify it is acidic at a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 as preferred by daylily plants. Work ground rock sulfur into the soil to lower the pH or limestone to raise the pH according to the package application rates.
- 3). Dig planting holes that are slightly wider and deeper than the daylily root ball and spaced 18 to 24 inches apart. Add a layer of organic compost into the bottom of the hole and set the root ball on top, so the crown is just below ground level. Pack soil around the root ball.
- 4). Water the daylily plants well after planting by soaking the soil to a depth of 10 to 14 inches. Provide supplemental water to the daylily plants to keep the soil moist during the summer growing season when the weekly rainfall is less than 1 inch.
- 5). Apply a 2 -to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the daylily plants to assist with moisture retention and limit weed growth.
- 6). Fertilize daylily plants with a 5-10-5 fertilizer in the first fall after according, following the package instructions for the daylily garden space. Apply 5-10-5 fertilizer each spring to promote blooming. Water the soil well after applying fertilizer to assist with absorption.
