Power Blackouts Knock-Out Cable Providers

Everyone hates when the power goes out, no matter what season it is. Texas in the dead middle of summer might possibly be one of the worst places to be in such a situation. The state has three incredibly large metropolitan areas that grew in size partially when the invention and affordability of air conditioning. If the Texas people didn't have air conditioning in the summer than businesses would not function and the people would not be able to sleep at night. When a series of blackouts started occurring in San Antonio in the middle of the summer, people started getting very restless after a few days of the same.

One of the problems complicating things was that during these blackouts the cable companies kept losing their stations and substations that were necessary for reaching the customers homes. Due to the size of the city, and the infrequency of power outages, these stations did not have the generator power to boot back up immediately and reach those homes and businesses that were equipped with generators. Many of the middle and upper class people did have generators for safety purposes, and those during that summer were benefactors of at the least, the cool air that they still had spewing from their air conditioners. The ones without satellite television or a digital television receiver were cut off from the news of what was happening around the city.

For the less fortunate people who could not reasonably afford a generator they were left to turn on their car and sit inside to cool down from the blistering heat. Some of the radio stations were still up and running but they didn't have constant updates from officials. Strangely enough, the best place to find the most accurate and up-to-date info regarding the blackouts was on the national cable news networks like CNN, msnbc, and Fox News, all of which were stationed more than a thousand miles away. The only people who had access to this information were those with satellite television and a generator.

After a week or more the Stanten family had gotten fed up without really knowing what was going on. They didn't have a generator at first, but after waiting in the heat for three hours for power to come back, Mr. Stanten, like many had rushed out to get a generator. Two days later after having no television or safety information so the family could know what was happening, Mr. Stanten went out and bought a satellite dish. He had heard from his neighbor that this was the only way to get the best reporting of their current situation.

The blackouts continued for a few more weeks before the governor in Austin was forced to do something about the situation. Texas had deregulated its energy sector and this was the result of private companies controlling the states power grid. Needless to say, the same blackouts weren't happening in Austin. Satellite television had helped the Stanten family and many others get through the disaster and they were incredibly impressed with the service. It had been a learning experience for the family, and this was one of the many valuable lessons they had learned.
