How to Organize Prayers
- 1). Find a piece of paper and a quiet place to gather your thoughts. On this paper, make columns for blessings, concerns and wishes for others. This will become the outline for your prayer.
- 2). Take a moment to think of the blessings you have in your life. Many times, it is helpful to think of specific things in your life rather than generalities. For example, instead of writing "family" as a blessing, think of specific family members who have touched your lives today. Do not forget to include things that many people take for granted, such as health and the talents you possess.
- 3). Next, write down the concerns that are on your heart. By giving these concerns up in prayer, you may feel that your problems aren't as bad as you first thought. Again, be specific in your concerns. If you are having financial difficulty, think about which bills are the most pressing and need addressing. If you feel separated from your spouse, ask yourself what is going on that is creating a disconnect.
- 4). Think of other people in your life who may need to be lifted in prayer. If you know people who have asked for prayers, add their names to your list along with their concerns. And even if you do not know someone's name, make a notation on the list. God knows that person, even if you do not. This sort of "praying in general" is one approach whereby you can still reap the full benefits of prayer. While it isn't possible to list every nation that is in turmoil, every child who is hungry, or every person who is hurting, they still need your prayers, and they benefit from your petition on their behalf.
- 5). Take a moment to pray for clarity and peace before you begin your time of prayer. Use this as a moment to clear your mind of everything else that is going on in the world and devote yourself to your spiritual health.
