    Size

    • An estimated 44 million tourists each year come to New York City. With such attractions as the Empire State Building -- an almost 1,500-foot skyscraper with more than 100 floors -- and the 305-foot-tall Statue of Liberty, it is a destination of foreigners and Americans alike. The city also features Broadway, where a total of 39 theaters in the Theater District of Manhattan allow tourists to take in a show.

    Features

    • Other famous tourism hot spots in New York City include the Bronx Zoo, a 265-acre complex of animal habitats that comprises the largest zoo in the United States. The New York Botanical Gardens is another favorite of tourists, with 250 acres of plants, flowers and trees for the enjoyment of nature lovers. Other New York City tourism staples are Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, where the famous Radio City Music Hall is located, and Times Square, where New Year's Eve is celebrated each year.

    History

    • The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the city is home to more than 2 million works of art. The American Museum of Natural History has an astounding 32 million pieces within its walls, with 25 buildings housing more than 45 permanent exhibits. It is one of the most visited museums on the planet.

    Considerations

    • Niagara Falls, a spectacular set of waterfalls northwest of Buffalo in western New York on the Canadian border, attracts more than 20 million tourists annually. New York also boasts 169 state parks, skiing in the Adirondack Mountains and the Catskills in the winter, professional sports teams in the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB, and gambling casinos along with horse racing establishments such as Belmont Park and Saratoga.

    Expert Insight

    • New York tourism attracts more than a million tourists from England to New York City alone each year, with Canadians making up the second largest group of visitors. The September 11th attacks in 2001 dealt tourism to the entire state and the city especially a severe blow. It took almost two years for the tourism to get back to the pre-attack levels
