So what do you do if you happen to be involved in one? If, after the accident, you are relatively in a fit condition then do make sure that the other passengers are all right.
If there is a complaint of an injury or you notice that there is a need for immediate attention, call 999 for medical help.
If, after the accident, emotions are running high, then call 999 for police assistance.
If, for some reason, the police are not around after the accident has occurred, then legally speaking, the onus is on you to notify them of the accident within the period of four hours.
You will also be obliged to inform your insurance company of the accident as soon as possible.
Always remember never to admit liability for the cause of the accident even if you feel or are directly accused of being at fault.
The question of liability is solely for the respective insurance companies to sort out.
It is a good idea to always keep a note pad and pencil in the glove compartment of your vehicle.
In order to further assist your insurance company in their investigation into the cause of the accident, make a rough sketch of how you think the accident occurred and the position of the vehicles at the time, before and after the mishap.
Also note down the registration number/s of the vehicle/s involved and remember to take down all the necessary details of the driver/s: name/s, address/es, telephone number/s and their insurance companies.
Not only this but also take down the details of any witnesses to the accident as your insurance company might require a written statement from these very witnesses if there is difficulty in proving liability.
If you happen to have a mobile phone with a camera facility on you, then take a photograph of the scene at the time of the accident.
This photograph will bear valuable testimony to the position of the vehicles after the accident occurred.
Also remember to take plenty of close-up pictures from different angles, of the damage to your vehicle.
These photographs will help your insurance company in their investigations.
