Understanding Chronic Pain Management With Hypnotherapy

103 19
If we are going to use chronic pain management it is to our advantage to understand what scientist have been telling us about pain and the nervous system.
They have told us that acute pain is normal, its sensations triggered in our nervous system that will alert us to a possible injury that could be the cause of the pain, therefore you need to take care of yourself or seek medical assistance.
Normally, when a part of the body experiences pain it sends a signal through the nervous system to the spinal cord, where it is processed and signals are sent to the brain stem.
The signal then propagates through the mid-brain region to the cortical region (where the sensory cortex is located), which creates a conscious sensation of pain.
Normally, this conscious sensation of pain is beneficial for an organism, it prevents us from needlessly damaging our limbs, although with modern medicine we obviously need to experience some physical trauma for the greater good of our health, making the pain useless.
It is worth mentioning that it's estimated that nearly 10 million people in the UK suffer with pain, leading to a quarter of people needing time off work.
Chronic pain is different this type of neurogenic pain is persistent and will continue to send signals to the nervous system for weeks, months or even years.
This could have been cause by an incident or accident where the person could have injured their back, had some sort of infection or it could be (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself), like in cases of Arthritis, Parkinson Syndrome, Cancer, Dystonia, Fibromyalgia.
It is not clear if these types of disorders are linked or share a common cause.
However in some cases where people suffer with psychogenic pain there is no evidence of past injury or body damage inside or outside the nervous system.
It is very important to point out that anyone with chronic pain should consult with their GP and gain their consent for hypnosis to be used to help them reduce their symptoms.
Pain is there for a reason and removing or reducing pain inappropriately can lead to further complications or injury.
Hypnotherapy uses a set of techniques designed to enhance focus and concentration, eliminate distractions and to heighten the responsiveness to positive suggestions that can change the clients thoughts, feelings, internal sounds (what they are saying to themselves), behaviours and their physiological state.
