    Training

    • The training for automobile mechanics varies widely. Some mechanics undergo training at a trade school while others serve under an apprenticeship. Still others gain experience through the military. Individuals who opt for trade school can expect to spend two years studying and gaining experience. Those who serve as apprentices gradually gain the experience needed to work more independently and on more complex tasks. Most garages prefer to employ workers who have certifications. Especially preferred is an Automotive Service Excellence certification, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    Duties

    • A mechanic must be able to perform a number of functions. Many vehicle owners turn to a mechanic only after they have investigated the issue on their own. Mechanics must confer with vehicle owners and examine the car, truck or SUV to diagnose the problem. After the initial diagnosis, the mechanic must then decide how to fix the problem, determine the cost of the repairs and then discuss this with the owners.

    Dangers

    • An auto mechanic must follow all safety protocols. Dangers for a mechanic include minor injuries such as a scrapped knuckle from working in the confines of an engine compartment. More serious injuries include burns from hot engine parts, broken bones from falling equipment and vehicles, and breathing problems from inhaling fumes. Fortunately most of these dangers can be avoided by paying close attention to the surrounding environment and following safety measures.

    Salary

    • The salary for mechanics varies depending on location, experience, training and the amount of work available. In 2008, the median hourly wage for a mechanic was $16.88, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bottom 10 percent earned less than $9.56, while the top 10 earned over $28.71 per hour.

    Considerations

    • Mechanics need good hand and eye coordination. They must also be able to think critically and analytically about engines and other vehicle functions. They benefit from having good focus and natural inquisitiveness. Mechanics must also have great people skills as they interact with vehicle owners as well as the vehicle.
