Kitchen Sink Installation
- 1). Place the sink face down on the kitchen countertop, 1½ inches from the front lip of the counter, and trace around its perimeter to draw a guideline for the sink opening. Set the basin aside and draw another sink shape ½ inch inside the first one. This creates two guidelines: the outer one for the sink lip, the inner one for the bottom of the basin. Use a power saw to cut and remove the inner sink shape.
- 2). Apply a bead of silicone sealant in the ½-inch space between the sawed out hole and the outer line you drew. The bead should be about ¼ inch thick. Apply a small bead of plumber's putty inside the drain of the sink basin and insert the strainer body. Secure the lock-nut on the strainer with an adjustable wrench.
- 3). Set the sink into the hole in the counter, lining up the sink's edging with the bead of silicone. Set the sink down over the silicone and wipe away any excess that oozes out. Get underneath the sink and place the gasket on the drain pipe by hand. Apply a bead of silicone around the gasket to achieve a waterproof seal. Apply a bead of plumber's putty to the underside of the sink at the joint between the sink and the counter.
- 4). Attach the piping, which for most modern households is PVC-based, using silicone sealant and PVC bond. Close the drain and fill the sink completely with water and leave it for at least 24 hours; this helps settle the sink into place.
