How to Paint With Preschoolers
- 1). Lay newspaper across all tables and surfaces they will be painting on. This will help when cleaning up and prevent them from staining surfaces with paint.
- 2). Give each preschooler a smock. Tell your students to roll up their sleeves and protect their clothing from stains.
- 3). Drop different colors of paint onto a paper plate for each preschooler. Put a dollop of each of the primary colors in a circle around a paper plate they can access easily. You can refill the colors as they go along.
- 4). Give each student a cup of cold water for rinsing the brushes. Use cups with tops to lessen the likelihood of spills.
- 5). Direct your class to paint common objects like the sun, a rainbow, or simple landscapes. Demonstrate on a large sheet of butcher paper what each object may look like.
- 6). Teach each of your students to hold a paint brush. Place the brush in their hands correctly and explain to them that they must hold the brush downward facing the paper at all time.
- 7). Explain the type of paint you are using and how it works. If you are using watercolors, for example, explain to your children that they must mix the colors with water to use them.
- 8). Instruct them to dip their brush in the paint to get different colors. Discuss how to mix colors together to create other colors. Have them tell you what colors they think they can create as you go along. Tell them not to use too much paint, to avoid a big mess.
- 9). Spend a few minutes helping each of your students paint his object, giving him advice as he proceeds. For example, remind students to draw pedals on their flowers or rays on their sun.
