How to Remove the Transmission in a 2001 Ford Escort

    • 1). Park the Ford Escort on a flat, level surface and set the parking brake. Open the hood and remove the negative battery cable.

    • 2). Jack up the front of the vehicle. Place jack stands under the front axles. Jack up the rear of the car. Place jack stands under the rear axles.

    • 3). Disconnect the throttle, speedometer and shifter cables with a wrench. Remove the vacuum lines with a screwdriver.

    • 4). Remove the rear U-joint with a wrench. Pull the driveshaft from the rear of the transmission. Wrap the end of the driveshaft in rags to prevent transmission fluid from getting everywhere.

    • 5). Position the jack directly under the center of the transmission. Raise the jack until it lifts the transmission and supports its weight.

    • 6). Remove the lower bellhousing with a wrench. Remove the torque converter bolts with a wrench.

    • 7). Remove the rear transmission mount bolts with a wrench. Remove the cross-member bolts with a wrench. Remove the cross-member carefully. All of the weight will now be supported by the jack.

    • 8). Lower the jack. Balance the transmission on both sides as the jack settles to keep it from slipping off. Slowly pull the transmission from under the vehicle, clearing any wires that might catch.
