Choosing a Killarney Hotel

105 14
Killarney is one of the most popular places in Ireland and has been a leading tourist destination for over a century. The beautifil scenery of the mountains and the famous Lakes of Killarney contributes to its popularity but it has much more to offer: traditional music and culture, good food and drink, golf and fishing are among its many attractions. And Killarney is famous for its welcoming, friendly atmosphere.

The population of the town is about 5,000 and most of the people are involved in some aspect of the tourist industry. To cater for the thousands of visitors Killarney has numerous hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and shops as well as one of Ireland's best entertainment centres - the INEC.

The hotels in Killarney range from three-star to five-star and there are approximately thirty in the town and surrounding area. All of them are of very good quality with excellent modern accommodation and all of them have in-house restaurants some of which are quite famous. Many have their own leisure centres and some have a swimming pool. All have a variety of bars which often feature traditional music.

Some of the factors which you may take into account when booking a Killarney hotel are price, star rating, location and facilities. Most of Killarney's hotels are within one mile of the town centre and about ten of them are right in the centre and within easy walking distance of all the good restaurants, pubs and shops. Many of them are on the Muckross Road which is a very scenic location at the foot of the McGillycuddy Reeks (Ireland's highest mountains). Two of the top five star hotels are about 1 mile from the centre but this is never a problem as Killarney has a very good, relatively inexpensive taxi service.

Prices vary but there is usually very good value in the three-star and four star hotels. Five star hotels can be quite expensive but they are top quality luxurious hotels and are well worth the money if you can afford it. The views of the lakes and mountains from these hotels are absolutely fabulous.

You can check which services are available in the individual Killarney hotels on the booking websites. Most of the hotels are family-friendly but it is advisable to check if there are extra charges for children, if the hotel has a crche facility and whether they serve children's meals. A few hotels allow pets and this will also be indicated on the booking website.

Killarney is extremely busy during the Summer months and it is advisable to book your hotel well in advance if you intend to visit any time between April and September. If you intend to visit for a big concert at The INEC you are advised to plan ahead as accommodation in Killarney tends to be booked out early for these events.

For those wishing to get slightly cheaper accommodation or if you find that the hotels are fully booked, there are hundreds of bed and breakfasts in Killarney and the surrounding areas. These are generally of very high standard. The difference is that they are smaller, more intimate and don't have a bar.
