Respectable leaders must be capable of delegating work and responsibilities to subordinates.
Although tasks are passed on to the rest of the team, the leader is still held liable for the success or failure of the project.
Effective managers must be able to delegate assignments with ease.
This takes considerable effort and time but targets are accomplished systematically.
It is a form of staff empowerment and helps employees to develop skills and self-confidence.
The process of delegation is crucial because this unburdens leaders and allows these people to focus on the more important aspects of the business or specific undertaking.
However, you need to find out if the assignment can be assigned and the person who gets the job is competent of doing the work efficiently.
Likewise, you need to determine if the assignment is too complicated and needs your personal supervision and involvement.
You also need sufficient time to entrust the work to another person and explain the preferred outcome and expectations of management.
There are several guidelines that can help you choose the appropriate person for the job.
  • Make sure that the task is fitted for the employee based on job title, qualifications, actual work performed, expertise and experience.
    This person should also work without much assistance.
    You may end up doing most of the work or spending a lot of time if the employee is not capable of performing said duties.
  • The staff member assigned to do the work must understand exactly the objectives and expectations of management.
    See to it that the individual can figure out all instructions that you give out in detail.
    The key is for the leader to ask about the progress of the work on a regular basis.
    Monitor the employee's performance and ask for a regular feedback report until the project is completed.
  • Secure the commitment of your subordinate.
    This assurance means that the worker is willing to perform all assigned chores and submit the output punctually.
    The person that you pick out for this particular undertaking must be given full control of the endeavor.
    In other words, you have full trust on the person and it is not just an act of passing the work without giving the worker any credit.
    The chosen staff must be able to attend all meetings related to the job and make sound decisions.
  • Find out the parts of the task that need proper monitoring.
    Give deadlines and schedule weekly meetings for evaluation.
    However, avoid micro-management and watch the person's back every minute of the day.
    Make it a point that everything is balanced and make adjustments if necessary.
