When Did You Last Cycle?

105 9
It's always fun to start an article by posing a question! You may think of yourself as being a cycling fan, but does your answer to the question above suggest that this is the case? The reality is that, no matter how much you enjoy an activity, life is so busy that it becomes easy to get distracted.

We may plan to get out on a bike, but sometimes things just don't happen. Before long, you realise that it's been some weeks (or even months) since you were last in the saddle. They say that you never forget how to ride a bike, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily a good thing to spend many months without riding!

Some people would suggest that the main reason that you should cycle regularly is because it represents a really good source of exercise. Although this is certainly true, I've never seen it as being my primary motive for getting on a bike. It may just be a psychological thing, but I've never found the thought of cycling as a means of exercising as being particularly motivational.

It may be different for you. Maybe the only way that you can persuade yourself to pull on your bicycle helmet and start riding is if you're thinking about the calories that you could be burning as a result. I realise that this is how some people would approach the situation.

On my part, I've always tended to focus on the enjoyment factor that I associate with the activity. It's about having fun, enjoying being outdoors and hopefully getting to see some new places. That's what really spurs me on. I've found that I do, however, need to schedule specific time to ensure that I get out cycling on a regular basis.

Otherwise, I find that I struggle to find the time. Since cycling is something that I really enjoy, it makes sense to build in this time. If I don't manage to do so, then I simply end up spending my time doing things that are a lot less fun. That's not something that I would recommend!

It certainly helps if you can view it as a group activity too. You might be able to plan bike rides with your children, or you may have friends who are also keen on cycling. The sociable aspect of the exercise certainly serves as a reminder, ensuring that you do get on your bike regularly.

Returning to the original question that I posed here, your own answer may have revealed that you've simply not been out on your bike as recently as you would have liked. Well, now's a great time to rectify that situation! Take some time to plan your next bike ride. You'll undoubtedly have plenty of fun and you'll get some exercise too!
