Gauguin wasn't actually an artist by trade. He worked as a stockbroker, but he hung out with famous artists like Paul Cezanne and Pissarro. He got into art by talking to them, but his attempts at creation were awkward at first. Nevertheless, he proceeded quickly and eventually became a full time artist. He moved to Paris to pursue his career, but in doing that, he lost his wife and children. Two of those children died during his lifetime. Because of all of this, Gauguin was the subject of severe depression, and he attempted suicide once in his life. Nevertheless, he preserved and was still able to create some amazing works of art.
Gauguin, like so many famous artists, suffered with bouts of depression throughout his life and constantly sought new directions for his art as he struggled for satisfaction with his own work. He became disillusioned with traditional and contemporary European art of the time and so started to find interest in other regional art from Africa and Asia. Japanese art was particularly to his taste.
Gauguin's relationship with Dutch artist Van Gogh is well documented and they spent a short period together in Arles in an attempt to inspire each other. The instability of each artist's character meant it was always likely to prove a rocky period, but they parted on reasonably good terms. Gauguin is known to have dismissed Van Gogh's work in part and failed to appreciate Vincent's talents. He did however purchase some of Van Gogh's sunflowers series.
Gauguin paintings remain an interesting and unique development that has retained it's role in French art. Impressionism and post-impressionism art movements hold Gauguin in high regard and his desire to choose unusual choices as subjects ensured his paintings retain interest and desire. Few artists have matched his character and style in recent years.
