Antique American Chinese Capitalism - Yin and Yang As Never Before
That was in 1810.
But what did Napoleon know? By 1844 the British had wrested control in a 99 year lease of a deep protected harbor which they began to secure as their west Pacific naval base, and over the sea near Victoria Canada would be their east Pacific Naval base.
And although within decades Canada had created itself a nation, it was years before Britain was only a visitor at this base, and only a decade ago that Hong Kong reverted to China.
During the re building after the war, Hong Kong under the British thrived, allowing free wheeling capitalism, and millions of Chinese poured into the enclave.
But the success of capitalism, the need as in Berlin to put up fortified fences to keep Chinese out, China saw wealth and power eluding them with the ways of Marx.
Thus gradually, Communist leaders saw this was also happening, and way too much with Japan.
There did seem to be some magic to this free wheeling capitalism.
How is it that China was on the winning side of World War Two, but now that Japan had been so utterly humiliated and forced to accept the Anglo American ways of democracy and capitalism it was beating Britain and America at their own game.
So while the Soviet Union imploded into Russia and the ten smaller bears, but rich with natural resources at just the right time, China gets by with few natural resources but a hard working, diligent, intelligent people who are now hitting their stride as never before.
While hundreds of millions of people move to the coastal factories they earn far more than they could have imagined.
And in the countryside, ever fearful of the many rebellions that do happen every time more people are displaced for another mega hydro plant or factory, China is helping create one hundred million bio gas cement septic tanks that collect the farm and human waste and a plastic tube feeds back to the family stove, giving clean natural methane.
Such a family no longer need to search for sticks to cook their meals, cleaning their homes of soot, improving the health of the family.
We might suggest this is one of those simple least expensive ways to begin to calm global warming and imagine several billion of these in places such as Africa, where the stripping of skeletal trees in the desert causes soot and the spread of the desert.
Meanwhile, Chinese are shopping and walking proudly in their parks in Shanghai and across the river a vast new ultra modern metropolis we see.
All to the good.
The communist leaders had not been brave enough to loosen controls and also try democracy, but with millions being taught sciences and computer technology people have a way of making their voices heard.
It seems that the extreme good fortune of China was to have a century to watch and marvel at how that little powerhouse became so rich they just could not ignore.
And besides, if Japan got any richer while China stayed backward and poor, how could they defend themselves if either Russia or Japan or that thorn in the paw of the Giant Panda, off shore Taiwan.
But while the Panda at times roars, we all can see it is much more pleasant to all get rich together than wars and bloodshed.
If only that realization was more wide spread around the globe, we might all face a very pleasant morning.
And it will come, if we keep working at it, with those we must.
And really, as in the case of Hong Kong and China, the Panda had been watching, observing, considering what was the best route to riches and power.
Selfinterest has the Anglo American Panda evolving, dressing like western bankers, talking like them.
It's good.
And to see the stylish young ladies in the expensive shops along the Bund, the exclusive riverfront like Paris, wearing name brand jewels and diamonds, happy and in charge of their lives, feeling free and rich.
It will be difficult to put those ladies back into black Mao pajamas.
Have them surrender their bracelets and necklace and shout about the evils of capitalism.
Too late.
The Panda is out of the bag.
And that is a very good thing, really.
