How To Secure A Wireless Network in Just Seconds

Ever wonder whose taking advantage of your unsecured home network? Don't know how to secure a wireless network yourself?

If you have a router and modem powering your wireless home network, you'll absolutely want to secure it with a password. Otherwise, anyone within reach of your router can access your internet connection for free, while also slowing down your internet speed.

Just ask yourself, have you ever connected to another unsecured home network to get internet for free? Most people have, including myself.

There's almost always a hand full of unsecured wireless home networks within reach of my laptop no matter where I happen to be at the time. It's very easy to secure a wireless network no matter what type of router you have.

Before you can learn how to secure a wireless network, you'll need to make sure you're using a computer that is connected to the network you'd like to secure.The first step is to access the router configuration page, using a web browser.

You'll need to type in the default gateway for your router in the address bar any web browser. Below are a couple of the most common default gateway ip addresses that may help you access the router configuration page.

  • 192.168.2.1 [http://192.168.2.1]

  • 192.168.0.1 [http://192.168.0.1]

  • 192.168.1.1 [http://192.168.1.1]



If you're prompted to login in order to access the router configuration page, the password might be set to nothing by default and the username may be admin. If you have trouble logging in you can reset the router or contact the router company and ask them for the login credentials.

Now look for the wireless security settings located somewhere in the navigation or menu bars. Every router will have a different router configuration page, so the options may not be the same for everyone.

Once you locate the page to secure your wireless network with a password, it's time to think of one. You'll also be required to choose a type of security encryption, WEP being the most common and widely-used. If you aren't sure which to choose, sticking with WEP is a smart choice.

Now that you know how to secure a wireless network, no one in your neighborhood will be able to access your internet without you knowing for free. You should also check to make sure your wireless home network is properly secured. To do this, simply try to connect on any device that hasn't connected to your home network yet. If you have to enter in a password to connect, you've successfully secured your home wireless network!
