How to Make Headlights Legal
- 1). Check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles and review your state's laws, regulations and codes regarding headlights. Federal motor vehicle laws will apply to all states, however, your state may allow a certain headlight attribute that another state has banned or vice versa.
- 2). Make sure you have two functioning headlights. Under federal law, you must have two operating headlights unless you are driving a motorcycle.
- 3). Make sure your headlights do not flash. Under almost all state laws, headlights should not flash unless on an emergency vehicle.
- 4). Ensure that your headlights can create a low beam and a high beam, also known as brights. It is also required by law that headlights can produce these two levels of light output.
- 5). See that your headlights are either white or yellow or a shade in between. These are the only colors allowed under federal law for motor vehicle headlights. If not, you will want to install properly shaded headlights.
