Laying Floor Tiles Step by Step

103 30
Laying floor tiles yourself is a cheap alternative to hiring someone out.
If installed correctly tiles on your wall and floor can look great, take little effort to upkeep and last for decades.
Be sure to do your research properly and know what you are doing before you start any major DIY project.
It is normally advised that you start laying tiles from the centre of the room outwards.
While this does generally mean that you will be cutting tiles along every edge of the room, it is more symmetrical to the eye.
As a first step, mark centre lines on the backer board and you can work from this.
If you measure your tiles, you can then add further lines and create a grid.
This will ensure greater accuracy.
You now need to apply adhesive.
Apply it with a square-notched trowel and try and get it even, with regular ridges.
Go up to the guide lines you have drawn.
Position the first tile carefully, using a slight twist as you press to work it into the adhesive, ensuring it will stick.
Place the adjacent tiles after this, using spacers to make sure you keep your spacing even.
When you get to edges, tiles will need to be cut with a tile cutter.
After placing all of the tiles, leave the adhesive to dry overnight.
Once it has dried, you can then grout.
Push the grout in firmly, scraping off the excess.
If you wish, you can use a dowel along the grout to produce a more even finish.
