Video: What Is a Proportional Relationship Between Two Variables in Math Called?
Video Transcript
Hi I'm Charlie Kasov. I'm a math teacher and today we're going to answer the question what is a proportional relationship between two variables in math called. Well the answer is a proportionality constant. So if you see X is to Y as 3 is to 7, that statement is expressing a proportion, so we can rewrite it as X:Y = 3:7, but that's still not real math yet, you can't do anything with that so we can change the colon to a fraction line. So we can say X/Y = 3/7 which of course if we have a fraction, an equal sign and a fraction, we cross multiply, so 7 x X = 3 X Y. So no matter what, the proportion will always stay constant. That's why it's called a proportionality constant. For every 7X there's going to be 3Y. So you've just learned the answer to what is the proportional relationship between two variables in math called. I've Charlie Kasov. Thanks a lot.
